What is your motto for developing something truly new?

Our work constantly challenges us. There are always new hurdles to overcome, we fail, experience rejection, discover unknown terrain.

The fuel/drive needed to tackle challenges again and again, to keep at things, to develop a creative breakthrough, has been described by Seth Godin.

Based on the research of Nobel Prize winner Richard Feynman, he has created a list of energising, accompanying mottos that could help us to do the work that others might run away from.

Here are a few suggestions:

  • I want to become a better version of myself
  • I want to live big dreams (because you can already see, taste or feel it)
  • I want to prevent disasters (or the end of the world as we know it)
  • I want to enter the competition (because someone else is gaining ground on me)
  • I want to meet deadlines (the boss/contract says I have to, or better yet there is a deadline)
  • I want to make connections (someone else will join in)
  • I feel the creative itch (the voice inside wants to be heard)
  • I feel dissatisfaction (because the way it is isn’t good enough)
  • I feel the engineer in me (because there’s a problem outside that needs solving)
  • I want to be known (I imagine life on the other side will be better)
  • I want to be generous (because it’s a way to make a contribution)
  • I need the money (pay the author)
  • I feel the pressure (the meeting is coming up soon)
  • I want to take advantage of the opportunities (because we can and it will be exciting to see how the universe reacts)
  • I want professionalism (because that’s what we’re good at)
  • I want revenge (you show the naysayers)
  • I want to be chosen (to get in, win the top prize, be chosen)
  • I notice dissatisfaction (because the spark of happiness arises again after the next success)

All mottos are sure to work. Some are really exhausting, others create a climate full of possibilities, joy and connections with other people.

What becomes possible when innovation begins with empathy?

Empathy is not a soft skill. It brings depth to ideas and makes true innovation possible. We often talk about putting people at the center. But in daily practice, it too often remains a slogan: methods dominate, time pressure kills listening, and emotions are dismissed as “unprofessional.” Yet empathy is not about being nice. It

Ideas come when I stop looking for them.

Ideas don’t always arise from thinking. Sometimes, they emerge in the in-between. Maybe you know this moment:Suddenly, there’s an idea.An image or a sentence. Something that felt out of reach before and now seems completely natural. And I ask myself:Why now?Why not when I was actively searching for it? What I’ve learned:Such impulses rarely come under
